As a charity that focuses its work in deprived communities, unemployment and lack of adequate training and skills are issues that our beneficiaries face time and again. The lack of opportunity in this regard is linked to a number of factors, e.g. poor educational attainment earlier on in life, lack of ambition and positive role models or even just a lack of accessible employment support services.

London Tigers has a successful track record of delivering employment, training and skills provision to a wide age group, particularly tackling those traditionally thought of as ‘hard-to-reach’. We provide different initiatives that enhance the employability of our beneficiaries, for example our volunteering opportunities provide invaluable work experience opportunities and help develop soft skills such as confidence and punctuality and our training programmes help beneficiaries obtain much needed accredited and non-accredited qualifications, helping them meet employers’ expectations.

Employment support programmes that we have run have provided end-to-end support for project beneficiaries. Our employment support programme funded by the London Development Agency (LDA) from 2009-2010 allowed us to engage with a total of 651 people from across the London Boroughs of Brent, Camden, Ealing, Tower Hamlets and Westminster.

In addition to providing opportunities for beneficiaries to obtain accredited qualifications, the project also assisted clients with soft skills support, CV preparation, job search and Matrix Excellence Award post-employment support. As a result of the project 110 of our beneficiaries were placed into employment.

Young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) are a key target group and we are working hard with a number of local authorities to create and promote opportunities for those falling into the NEET category.
Our background in youth and sports has given us an acute understanding of the needs of these young people and also the experience and skills to be able to engage with them in a meaningful way. Our ethos is to let our beneficiaries tell us what their needs are, not vice-versa, and we endeavour to ensure that our programmes are as flexible as possible to meet a diverse range of needs.

We also recognise that traditional employment routes do not suit everybody and we fully support apprenticeships and vocational qualifications. London Tigers will be developing a number of social enterprises in the coming years; viable businesses that plough profits back into the community and into the development of local people. We are hopeful that our social enterprises will be another avenue to help local unemployed people into sustainable work and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs.

In 2009, London Tigers achieved the prestigious Matrix Excellence Awards for our advice and guidance services; the Excellence Award is given “to acknowledge the tremendous achievements of organisations that have truly set an example for others in the use of the matrix standard for information advice and guidance services” and is only awarded to a handful of organisations on an annual basis.
